I’ll stick to the Rome itinerary only and give a basic rundown of my parents: they don’t travel. My parents rarely take airplanes and i think my dad has been to Europe twice ever. He’s over 70. He has always said Italy was on his bucket list so we’ve convinced him to get his passport over the past year and sign up for the trip. He has only suggested that he wants to drink wine and take in a soccer match. So the planning has been left up to me. So far this is what I have (any ideas, comments, etc. are welcome):

Day 1: Arrive at noon. I figure that we’ll take the metro into the city. 1) because it’s cheaper than a taxi and 2) it’ll be good to get them accustomed to the metro if we intend to use it. We’re staying near Sant’Angelo. Have a wander around the Centro Storico and Campo dei Fiori areas. Check out Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Basilica S.M. Sopra Minerva, and Chiesa del Gesu (if we can). Check out the AS Roma store.

Day 2: Go to Porta San Paolo and wander over to Mt Testaccio (mom really wants to see it–if you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s a mountain of broken pottery from ancient Rome, or at least that’s what I’ve read); Baths of Caracalla; have to go to Io Bimbo to pick up a lettino da campeggio for the 15 mo old. and across the road is Centrale Montemartini a Sculpture museum in an old power plane (that’s more my cup of tea). If time permits maybe go over to Appian Way and see some catacombs (No idea if those are good catacombs to see or not, any input would be great). Is the parco Acquadotti too far to go? My mom wants to see some Aqueducts.
Back to Sant’Angelo area for nice family meal

Day 3: Get up early and go to Termini, off to Venice and Florence .

Day 10: Arrive back in Rome by early afternoon, go to Trastavere where we’ll stay for the rest of the trip. Wander through Trastevere in the afternoon. Know that there’s a Coppa Italia match but that the teams haven’t been decided. Both Lazio and Roma are scheduled. Maybe try to get tickets. If Lazio, maybe find some merchandise (I like to collect jerseys and know it’s a no-no to support both Biancocelesti and Giallorossi). I would also like to see Immobile and Lucas play. If can’t get tickets, wander around.

Day 11: Vatican tour in am. Any and all advice is welcome. I’ve been before (20 years ago almost). We waited in line on spring break. I don’t want to do that again. I don’t mind paying to skip, especially with my parents and a 15 mo old, but I’m not sure how to go about that and if there’s a good tour operator to go with. What are the perks with the tour, etc. I have looked up RomeVacationTips briefly but haven’t settled on anything. Friends were telling us that they went on a tour that included a visit to the Vatican’s necropolis. Not sure if that’s with every tour. Thinking maybe in afternoon check out Piazza del Popolo and going down to Spanish steps and then the Barberini Piazza.

Day 12 – Free Day. Maybe the Borghese museum, maybe the Zoo, maybe some sort of weird Architecture area like EUR, or Ostia Antica or go to Marina di Cerveteri (mom mentioned this).

Day 13: Check out Forum, Colosseum (tour), Altare della Patria.

Day 14: Wander around. Maybe check out a graffiti tour or a cooking class

Day 15: Leave super early.
